The 1959

PA-22/20

In the summer of 2008 the Chapter  purchased a 1959 Tri-Pacer PA22 N2869Z aircraft, pictured with Bobby Barnett, who sold the aircraft to Chapter 240 and then joined the chapter and is actively working on its restoration. Accompanying Bobby is chapter member Paul, who has flown the aircraft in the past.

A membership team collected the PA-22 from the hangar and Bobby’s home and transported it to the EAA Chapter 240 hangar. Watch the video.

The 0320-150 horsepower engine will be rebuilt, the aircraft re-covered to and offered for sale by the Chapter prior to flight. All required inspections, workmanship standards and close oversight will be part of the rebuild and restoration.

The purpose of the Restoration Project is to utilize and further develop the extensive skills and capabilities of the chapter membership. These include all aspects of the restoration; avionics, welding, brazing, fabric work, doping, painting etc. Members are encouraged to learn new skills and techniques, supervised by skilled and experienced team members.

Chapter members are restoring the PA-22 during Saturdays, starting at 9 am and Wednesday evenings, at 5:30 pm. Members and guests are invited to join in the work, under the supervision of Project Leaders Chuck Shipman, Paul Dolan, Melissa Ortega and Jon Martin.

To date work is already underway, with wings being prepared for re-covering. The airframe has been prepared and sand-blasted, and is primed. With the onset of warmer weather dedicated team will tackle the fuselage, fuel system, brakes, avionics and instrumentation, landing gear and engine.

A popular modification to the venerable Piper Tri-Pacer was to convert it back to conventional gear configuration using one of several STCs developed throughout the years.

This modification, typically accomplished during a re-fabric or re-build/restoration (but capable of being done with fabric in place), included removal of the nose gear, adding forward mounting lugs for the Pacer style main gear, adding a tail wheel mounting bracket and toe brakes. A tail wheel assembly and Pacer style main gear rounded out the basic modification.

The attraction of this modification is mostly personal taste, modest performance improvements were demonstrated, improved off-field performance of the conventional gear and the “cool factor” of owning and operating a great Tail Wheel aircraft. When combined with other popular STC’ed mods like big tires, “VGs”, larger engines and props, etc., these converted “Pacers” are real off-field, back country performers.
